You must know how to operate a tractor and what safety precautions to take. This is important because there have been fatal accidents involving the use of tractors. You can learn how to use a tractor through someone who is already familiar with the vehicle.

Here are some guidelines you can follow in operating a tractor:

  1. You must study and familiarize the operating manual of a tractor before using one. The manual must be with you in the tractor so that you can get references more conveniently.
  2. You must be in the proper physical health in operating a tractor. You should be in good health and sober when operating a tractor to avoid any injuries. Wear the proper clothing and boots in driving the tractor. Then, if you have jewelries, remove them in using the tractor.  Also, if you have a long hair, then tie it back.
  3. Before driving the tractor, it is best to conduct a safety check first. Look around the tractor and check if there is any debris or other obstacles. Check the tires, the radiator, and the check if there are any leaks underneath. You must also make sure that you have fully functional fire extinguisher with you in the tractor for safety precautions.
  4. Use the handholds and the access steps in climbing the tractor. You must be properly seated in the driver’s seat of the tractor when operating the controls. Also, do not jump on or off the tractor like a cowboy. The seat and the mirror must be adjusted to a position that is comfortable for you and strap the seat belt on. Check the manual in using the tractor, especially if you are not familiar with the controls yet.
  5. Check the path where the tractor will be going. Make sure there are no pets, people and debris around its path. Tractors are slower than cars, so watch out for cars when driving the tractor on the highway. When on an uneven ground, or on turns, drive carefully. You must also avoid ditches, wet surfaces and banks.
  6. When going up and down a hill, drive with extreme caution. Put the gear on the right position and engage it in four-wheel-drive.
  7. When using other machines like trailers and lifts with the tractor, make sure they are working properly. In hitching a chain or towrope on the tractor, make sure it is as low near the ground as possible. To avoid overturning, add ballast weight on the front and back of the tractor.
  8. Before leaving the tractor, make sure you stop it completely. This means applying the engine properly, stopping the engine or removing the key. Also, do not park the tractor on a slope if it is carrying heavy loads.
